about.

Making a difference for a network of 50,000 nurses is no small feat. Ascension Nursing Center of Excellence (ANCoE) initiative was created to focus on the needs of nurses and take a fresh look at how they are being served by technology. Its mission was to make Ascension the best place to practice nursing.

Nurses are frequently stretched thin in healthcare and part of the problem is disparate and outdated technology. Too frequently nurses had to jump over hurdles to do simple tasks like checking their schedule or accessing basic resources. Ascension wanted to provide nurses with a one-stop-shop platform that could help nurses flourish both professionally and personally.

my role.

As the senior designer, I owned the end-to-end design of OneNurse, defining the information architecture, foundational workflows, and initial product vision. I collaborated with a fellow designer to design critical workflows within a custom design system, led client review sessions, and translated high-level concepts into detailed, build-ready MVP flows. Partnering closely with product and engineering, I helped deliver an MVP that launched successfully on the Apple App Store.

key activities.

Defined and prioritized core product feature sets—including shift swaps, team communication, and just-in-time resources—balancing user needs, business goals, and delivery constraints.

Established a scalable design system to drive consistency, improve design and engineering efficiency, and support seamless handoff to development teams.

Led a participatory naming initiative that engaged nurses directly in the product’s identity, strengthening adoption, ownership, and emotional connection to the app.

Developed brand concepts and visual direction grounded in user insights, ensuring the product resonated authentically with its nursing audience.

Supported internal launch communications, including the creation of launch videos, to build alignment and momentum around the Nursing Center of Excellence and the OneNurse app.

Planned and facilitated usability testing to validate assumptions, reduce delivery risk, and inform iterative improvements prior to development.

results.

Owned end-to-end delivery of the OneNurse MVP, resulting in an on-time App Store launch with high-impact, workflow-critical features.

Established large-scale user participation by involving over 15,000 nurses in shaping the product and its identity.

Reduced delivery risk and saved engineering time by validating and deprioritizing prospective features—including paystub access, wellness resources, and career guidance—through early research and evaluation.
